Total Contribution (TC): 150
Average Contribution (AC): 30
Excess Contribution (EC): 40

There were five total participants each contributing 10, 10 , 40, 40 and 50 respectively. The total pot was 150 with the average contribution equal to 30. If the three winners were Matt (1), Mary (2) and John (3), the award calcuations would be as follows:

Matt would receive 10/30 (C/AC) or 33% of the first place award. The first place award is 50% of the total pot yielding 75. Because Matt only contributed 10, he only received 33% of 75 yielding a total award of 25. This leaves 50 (75-25) to be divided amongst all players that contributed more than the average. This is called the residual balance. The residual 50 is split between Mary, John and Luke. John and Luke both receive 25% (C-AC)/EC of the residual yielding 12.50 while Mary receives 50% (50-30)/40 of the residual yielding 25. Mary and John receive their full winnings, 45 and 30 respectively, because their contribution was equal to or above the average contribution. These winnings are in addition to the residual winnings yielding the awards displayed in the table above.
